060 Luke Carlson: ChinaFIT The "Ripe" Market

February 07, 2018

For episode 60 we catch up with CEO of Discover Strength, Luke Carlson. We were honored with his time at ChinaFIT and look forward to the future connections with such young talented man.

Listen in as we discuss the Chinese market and the technology implementations Luke uses at Discover Strength.

We thank Luke for his time and appreciate his insights.

"I had the pleasure of attending one of Luke's workshops on personal training business management at ChinaFit in 2016. Additionally, I had the chance to visit with Luke extensively during the ChinaFit conference and found him to be one of the most informed and intelligent business people I've come across in many years. If you are seeking to understand business opportunities in the fitness industry I'd recommend Luke very highly. He is very well read and informed. His council is invaluable I assure you." -Bryan K. O'Rourke

About Luke Carlson

Luke comes to the fitness industry with some serious cred; a masters in exercise physiology from the University of Minnesota and experience working as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Minnesota Vikings.

Ten years ago, Luke thought his career would be on a different trajectory. “I either wanted to be an NFL strength and conditioning coach forever, or I wanted to be a tenure-track faculty member in a research institution,” he shared. But, a mentor and fitness industry legend offered a different path: “My mentor suggested I do something business related.”

He plunged into researching the idea after a health industry entrepreneur told Luke he needs to read the seminal business books Good to Great and Built to Last. That was all it took for Luke. “I started a journey where I became incredibly passionate about business, leadership, and management, not just exercise,” he exclaimed.

Luke researched and formed his company to address a need that wasn’t being adequately filled in the Twin Cities. Discover Strength opened in Chanhassen with its first location in 2006. Today, the company boasts three locations, one in highly desirable downtown Minneapolis.

What Makes Discover Strength Different

Educated, Expert Training Staff

Our team of Personal Trainers are not simply people who enjoy fitness. Rather, they are experts who hold degrees in exercise science with focused study in exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, and nutrition. Additionally, they hold certifications from organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine, the gold standard in the field of exercise science. Clients come to Discover Strength to learn from and be pushed by our team of experts.

Efficient

We want to see you twice per week. Our average workout is approximately 30 to 45 minutes. You’ll be working out from the time you walk in until the time you leave. Our approach yields far better results in far less time. The scientific research is very clear: For best results, strength train less, but strength train harder.

Evidence Based

Our entire fitness prescription is based on peer-reviewed scientific research. Rather than jump on the latest fitness fad or market-driven trend, we look at the scientific evidence to determine what will work best for you. This may not be a popular approach. But we’re more concerned with helping you produce great results than we are with being popular.
